SERVICES

Supported Carers

‘They take me on outings and holidays, they’re kind, they take me to contact’
Josh aged 17

Stepdown Supported Carers support young people aged 16 to 25 years by providing them with a supportive family setting that they can live in on a full time basis.

Young people living with supported carers require extra support as they move towards independence. The young person will be supported by their carer to develop a range of skills as they move to independence. Support will be given to help them become involved in their community and to develop their practical and social skills. The young person will be assisted into further education, training or employment.

Young women who are pregnant or have a baby will be supported in a family environment to develop their parenting skills.

What Do Support Carers Do?
Stepdown Supported Carers offer placements in a supportive family setting to young people aged 16 to 25 years who require support to learn the skills they need for independent living.

Supported Carers come from a variety of backgrounds. They can be married or single, working or retired, childless or have children still living at home. Some Carers have children who have left home and they miss the company of young people. We need a variety of Carers in order to meet our young people’s individual needs.

Young people living with supported carers require extra support as they move towards independence in the form of practical skills such as cooking, budgeting, employment/training and emotional support in their transition to adulthood.Young people prepare to move into Supported Care around the age of 16. They stay for varying lengths of time, from a few months to a few years. Most of us can remember what we were like at 16 and the thought of living alone at this age can be very daunting and isolating. Supported Carers will offer encouragement and advice. Stepdown supported carers and staff work in partnership with Local Authority social workers as well as other relevant professionals to provide the best care and support possible’
